WRITING FOR BUSINESS

Whatever industry or service you, or your organisation, belong to, clear, effective communication is key to success. Writing skills indicate and develop thinking skills.

Presentation, development, research, sales and marketing are all dependant on an ability to communicate ideas and information appropriately and accurately. Poorly written correspondence, proposals, sales pitches and documentation appear at best unprofessional and at worst mislead or deter clients, customers and partners.

WRITING FOR BUSINESS workshops (half-day, full-day) deliver the knowledge and skills fundamental to writing proficient, professional English. They include some or all of:

  • TAP analysis - Type (email, letter, advert, proposal, report), Audience (colleagues, manager, client, customer) and Purpose (inform, persuade, sell) of documents
  • Planning - brainstorm, mindmaps and outlines
  • Drafting - paragraphs: introduction, content, development, summary
  • Sentence structure - clauses, length, sense
  • Appropriate writing style - clarity, political correctness, jargon and cliche
  • Editing - spelling and vocabulary; tips to remember frequently misspelled words
  • Punctuation and grammar - commas, colons and semi-colons; tense and subject-verb agreement; abbreviations and apostrophes
  • Proof-reading, polishing and final copy

Participants can bring works-in-progress for discussion and editing. Case-studies and exercises take place individually, working in small groups and through plenary discussions.

One-to-one coaching, document drafting and editing are available as stand-alone services or follow-up programmes
